Blog2024 ≫ Way back, I had another hostel adventure

Before I get into our trip to York (and I'm well aware I still haven't written up the main bit of our trip to Singapore yet, so there is a good chance of this never happening) I will cover my last hostel trip for work.

I had last Wednesday off, a nice bonus day that was really just intended to get me out of commuting to London this week. Didn't work out, I had to do two trips in the end, but at least the day off was nice. Thursday morning I packed and headed in to work. Got a very slightly later train, so half an hour's less rushing. Next train is shorter, but less busy, it doesn't get you in until nine. I didn't have meetings until half nine, so treated myself.

Work ok, very busy. I had confidential meetings which I struggled to find confidential spaces for, kept finding the meeting rooms booked up. Going to use that as a reason to work from home all this week I hope.

Weekend bin food ready meal for lunch, then more work, no expensive coffees today. But not really a money saving trip anyway. To the hostel after work which I'd booked to enable a gig in the evening. I'd been given exactly the same bed in the same room as last week which was an odd coincidence in the Generator which must have two hundred rooms all rammed with bunks. Then a wander about, a stop in The Lord John Russell for a pint of real ale, and Off to MJ Hibbett's Totally Acoustic at The King And Queen. I've been a few times, but not for ages, and it was great. Mark did three songs, Bad Back, It Only Works Because You're Here, and another I can't bring to mind, then the next act was Mr Spoons. He did songs on the ukulele, including an awesome mash-up of Radiohead's Creep with Chas'n'Dave's Rabbit. Then the final act wasPaul Tierney, absolutely brilliant, heartfelt acousticness.

It's either becoming quite the celeb hangout, or everyone had brought their most famous friend of something, as in the audience of less than fifty were several people I had heard of. Steve Lamacq off the radio was there, PBH of the PBH Free Fringe, and Fruitbat from Carter USM. I told someone I was from Folkestone and they said "oh did you come up with them", seems Fruity also lives in Folkestone now. Great night, met some great people, had a great time. Drank some beer too which is unheard of for a Thursday these days. Still start of my little holiday.

Walked back to the hostel and it was fine and quiet in the little room of four. It seemed no-one was noisy or snored, which probably means I was noisy and snored. First sound was my own alarm going off in the morning. I did not have to go to work to work, but decided to go and use the shower and coffee machine there anwyway, plus rearrange my bags and put some unneccessaries in my locker. Then another walk round while waiting for Clare and the boys and our trip to York.
