Clare downloaded a treasure trail, a kind of outdoor escape room puzzle for Sandwich, and we made that the focus of our great day out after my Saturday morning run. We headed off on the train from Folkestone West. It's an easy journey, no changes, just a few stops beyond Dover.
We had a quick wonder round to find a shop before heading to the star point of our treasure hunt. Then there were clues to follow on our printed out sheet, we had to find things around the town that would usually lead us to a number or some words that would then eliminate things on the map, ultimately leading us to some virtual treasure. It was a really good way to see interesting parts of a town. It took us down residential areas that we probably wouldn't normally. Sandwich is a Cinque Port, and has some amazing mediaevel buildings. There's a great history centre too that had a working blacksmith. There must be some pictures of me with the swords here that I will get of Clare's phone later.
Some great pubs too, well one really good pub that we went in first, The Kings Arms, then some others that didn't quite make the grade. The Kings Arms had a lovely panelled interior with a big fireplace. There looked to be a micropub, and they were ok for the boys to come in too. It didn't actually have real ale though, but it was still good, and the beer was more to Clare's taste. We kept the boys topped up with fizzy drinks and sweets so they were happy too.
We had a really good Italian meal at about half five (hey I think I missed a meal here, what happened to lunch?) and were home again on a train about half seven.
Just remembered someone has to go back and collect the car from the station today, and it's raining now.
Drizzle and a gentle breeze, 6 - 12℃.
