Blog2026 ≫ Great weekend with Suede

Too much to pack into one post. I haven't updated previous gig post with Suede details, and since then I've only gone and finished Runuary 1 with a parkrun, driven to Portchester and then Portsmouth, been to a pub not drinking, and seen Suede again!

Parkrun felt good, but wasn't as quick as it felt. Still, runuary 1 doneuary for another year, go me! Showered and in the car, dropping wife and T2 at Tesco on the way, leaving T1 to make his own way to the gym. Fairly plodding run down there, just traffic, took three hours. Nice sit and chat and cuppa, and then out to pick up Andy for the gig. Had a senior moment on the way to his house, confused by all the roadworks round his way, drove the wrong way. But soon back on track, car filled up with petrol again, and down to Portsmouth.

No trouble getting into Portsmouth, thought the roads might be funny because of football. Would have been a good one to be at, at home to West Brom, as they won three nil and are now another place clear of the relegation zone. New players making things better apparently.

Parked at the back of Portsmouth Guildhall on an exensive on street parking thing, but a good spot for a quick getaway later. We walked to a food court place called Outside In maybe? I had a vegan UFO burger, like a burger that had been sealed in a pie maker. Novel, ok. And an alcohol free beer for me, the first of about five this day.

Next heading down Eldon Street, where we had pub crawled a couple of times in the distant past. Perhaps we were already on Eldon Street. We went past the dreadful Raven, and the now closed down Eldon Arms aiming for King Street Tavern, but as I was not drinking and so had no need for real ale settled on Scotts Tap and Keller. A nice enough bar, except for all the Jeremy Clarkson lager. I would not have agreed to go in if I'd seen that in advance, that's not a good look for a place. Nice enough, though very quiet. Sat and chat, then walked back to the Guildhall.

Nice to see another very busy crowded gig venue, a lot of enthusiastic and still mostly older punters. I saw two people from Portsmouth Venue Campaign giving out flyers for the Wedgewood Rooms, but did not stop to chat. I recognised them but would they remember me? Anyway, inside, look at the merch, then to what looks like a completely new bar to me. Then in to a good spot to watch the support, Bloodworm again. Still great, I like them, still the rumbling Joy Division sort of sound. A great three piece. I realise they remind me of Marion.

Still in that good spot for the start of Suede, I said oh yes, I know everything about this gigalready, like yesterday they will do the three opening tracks off the new album, then three old ones, then a mix of mid period stuff before three bangers at the end. I was right for the first six, so we were in a great spot for those. Then we went to the bar, and I could hear they were playing By The Sea from Coming Up, this wasn't on my schedule. We went back in to a worse further back spot, it was very crowded, and enjoyed the rest of the gig. They played:

Saturday night because it was Saturday night. A better gig than the night before, but not much better. Just different enough to make it worth going more than once.

Suede on stage at Portsmouth Guildhall

I bought a vinyl on the way out and we met Bloodworm and had a little chat and got a signed picture like tragic old fan boys.

A lovely roast dinner today, no more running, then a three hour drive home in horrible rain.

I could have a drink today, I bought some nice wine, we'll see!

(Oh of course I'm going to open it)

Heavy rain and a moderate breeze, 5 - 9℃.

  1. Running at least 5km every day in January.
  2. Brand new song! Dedicated to "The Insatiable Ones, The Mild Ones, The Wild Ones, all the ones"... going to appear as a link here because of the name Tribe in our family tree. But not about our family.
  3. Including the completely unaccompanied bit that worked better than last night when he did it on a different song.
  4. Actual encore, they went off and we cheered them back.
